Our Story
Founded in the autumn of 2015, Diversified Logistics Training Solutions (DLTS) rises to the challenges of the ever-evolving trucking industry. Guided by CEO David Smith, a seasoned professional with a rich history in the field, DLTS is dedicated to helping businesses and municipalities streamline CDL training for their employees in order to meet the vast need for more drivers across the country. With seven years of firsthand experience as a professional truck driver at Roadway Express, David transitioned into management in 1980, serving with dedication until his retirement in 2012 as the President of Trucking Management Inc.
Driven by a desire to give back to an industry that had been instrumental in his success, David established DLTS in the fall of 2015. In 2016, the company inaugurated a conventional CDL school, with a personalized approach to enhance the student and instructor experience. Recognizing the pitfalls of the prevalent "boot camp approach" in traditional CDL schools, David sought a creative solution to address the high dropout rates for students and turnover rates for instructors. In 2018, an innovative dock-to-driver program was developed in collaboration with YRC Freight, introducing on-the-job training with the company's equipment. Although the partnership with YRCF concluded due to COVID, it laid the foundation for DLTS's distinctive CDL training approach.
The "DLTS Way" training model was publicly introduced in the Kansas City area in fall 2021, gaining significant success. A national campaign followed in January 2022, aligning with the emerging Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations. In February of the same year, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) changed CDL training with new mandated curriculum requirements. DLTS, meeting these guidelines seamlessly, swiftly adapted to assist other companies and industries in navigating the changing landscape.
David has used his great experience and extensive industry knowledge to help maintain the limitless opportunities that the trucking industry can provide. David has a passion for helping companies efficiently train their drivers and ultimately has a heart for the drivers themselves: “Most trainees who seek CDL training are oftentimes marginalized community members stuck in minimum wage jobs. DLTS aims to alter their trajectory by providing them with the skills and opportunities for a fulfilling career as professional drivers, while helping their employers, and in that respect, I am very proud of what our company does”.
